Schurz Park Trees

Schurz Trees in Rain

A few years ago I setup a glass plate in front of the camera for this shot, and put different substances on the glass: water, vaseline etc. I don't remember anymore how this particular shot was done. I guess I could just have bought a fog filter, but I had been reading about effects that were used in motion picture films in the early days and I had wanted to fool around with the idea of shooting through glass that wasn't right up on the lens.

When I looked at the scan of the negative, it still wasn't "enough" diffusion so I ran it through a median filter - and blended it with the original shot. For better or worse - I'm not sure yet.

However you did it, keep doing it - this is amazing!

And the really annoying thing is - I can't tell you how many photos I took in Carl Schurtz park when I lived on E. 83rd street - and not a one of them was any damed good, let alone a masterpiece like this one.

I'm a sucker for a good arc in a photo - and you've got several - of course the walking path, echoed by the arc of the benches and the wrought-iron fence. Then there are the arcs made by the tree branches. And way of in the misty distance, a little arc from the tour boat and a larger arc formed by the North end of Roosevelt Island and ??Mill Rock Park??

The person with the 2 poodles is the coup de grace - I put my finger over him, and the whole thing just doesn't look as good without him (her.)

Best regards,
SteveR

I think you guys are wrong about it being *that* good, but I won't fight you about it. I had shot this many many times in different ways. The problem is that right behind me is this annoying flag pole, and the tree never quite seemed to fit into the frame right and I couldn't get the curve etc. etc. So I decided to do it with the 21mm and give it all a very slight twist to the left like a slight vortex. Etc. Etc. I almost didn't scan it yesterday, except that I remembered how much effort went into it and said, oh - what the heck, let's look at it again.

Matt, me and Blogger are like "that" (two fingers together) and I'm sure they'll put a spell check in the comments if I ask them to.
