Steve - these are done with a watcom tablet. I never really discussed how they're done since I thought they were pretty common. I've seen them in advertising quite often.
But basically, they're just painted. I make a new empty layer or a couple of new layers for the painting. Sometimes I will use one "find edge" layer as well.
After that - just like any other painting its a matter of mixing colors; deciding on brush strokes. Sometimes I use a "smoothing" filter for the background, or some area that should be less distinct.
I think they're similar to pastel chalk paintings. But as I say, the major thing is figuring out the color scheme and then bit by bit filling it in.
This one was probably the most time consuming as I was working on it off and on since Sunday.

Your dad looks great! He'll probably out live both of us...what's his secret?
Dave - these "painted" photos of yours are amazing - this one is really great, and as Matt says, your Dad looks terrific.
I think I may have missed some of your discussion of how you do these - is it with a graphics tablet?

Matt, his secret is being lit by floodlights in the hot tub. Actually, I hope I'm in half the shape he's in at his age.
