When I put either the C/V or the Leica lens on the M3, I noticed today that the M3 won't focus as close as the modern lens is capable of focusing. Of course on the R2A is works perfectly.
At first I thought - damn - something wrong with the M3. I sort of guessed that lenses in dem days didn't focus as close as modern lenses. Then looked up the issue and here is what it is all about:
"Just be careful if you use an older M3 body. They left the factory with a minimum rangefinder distance of one meter, but can easily (by a tech!) be adjusted to focus closer, like the M2 through M7 bodies." - Al Kaplan, Leica FAQ

The m2 - m7 bodies already focus as close as the lens is capable of focusing. It means that the M3 can be adjusted so that it can focus as close as the M2 - M7.
